Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the shooting occurred in the 1500 block of South 27th Avenue before 1am, CBS News reported.
Police said nine victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and three others were taken to Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. One more victim entered a hospital on the University of Pennsylvania’s Pavilion Campus. Bethel said at least eight victims were taken to police.
Bethel said among the injured shooting victims, two of them were boys and both are expected to survive.
Bethel said officers had already responded to the same block late Saturday night at the beginning of Sunday. Police arrested during previous incidents and continued to monitor the area throughout the weekend. The officers then returned on Sunday after receiving a big music report. While responding to another incident nearby, officers heard the shooting and rushed to the block.
Bethel said he believes there are about 40 individuals who may have been present at the time of the shooting. He added that there was a replacement of the shooting and dozens of shell casings may have been recovered from the scene.
Police said that although their role in the shooting is unknown, one person was detained with a weapon.
Officers were monitoring the block early on the weekend after responding to previous obstructions and arrests related to big music and gatherings. Police were sent to a nearby call for priorities when they heard the shooting on their return home.
