TEHRAN – Russian officials have condemned the military threat amid growing tensions between Tehran and Washington, and have repeated calls for a political and diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear issue.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Friday that Moscow firmly believes that nuclear issues must be resolved “only through political and diplomatic tools.”
He emphasized that Russia views Iran as a strategic partner, saying, “All parties involved in the Iranian situation must exercise restraint and focus on diplomatic efforts.”
Peskov’s remarks came in response to questions about recent U.S. military forced measures against Iran, which Russian officials have consistently opposed.
On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova warned that military action against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure would have “inevitable, large, irreversible radiological and humanitarian consequences across the Middle East (West Asia) and the world.”
She reiterated Moscow’s stance that overseas threats, including potential bombings, are “unacceptable,” highlighting Russia’s commitment to a “sustainable negotiated solution” that addresses Western “bias and misconceptions” about Iran’s nuclear programme. Zakharova also confirmed that Russia has recognized Iran’s “legitimate interests” in peaceful atomic energy under the Non-Diffusion Treaty (NPT).
Furthermore, Russian Deputy Minister Sergei Lyabukov denounced President Donald Trump’s recent “ultimate” against Iran, calling it “a tactic that imposes Washington’s will on Tehran.”
In a recent interview, Liabakov urged both sides to engage in rational dialogue before being “too late” and said “we must double our efforts to achieve agreement based on logic.”
He warns that Trump’s approach risks further destabilizing the region, reflecting broader criticism of the US unilateral Russia.
