TEHRAN – Ali Baleni’s ambassador to the United Nations office in Geneva has sharply criticized the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for adopting a political and discriminatory resolution against Iran.
During the Council’s 58th regular session on Thursday, Bahrain accused him of being identified as approval of the resolution (A/HRC/58/L.20/Rev.1).
“The adoption of such a solution is a clear misuse of this platform, not only undermining the efficiency of the council, but also distracting valuable resources from the actual crisis,” Bahraini told the delegation.
Iranian envoys accused the western countries of sponsoring resolutions, particularly Britain and Germany of double standards and political manipulation. He argued that these countries must be responsible for their broader role in perpetuating the Iranian people and their wider role in perpetuating global injustice.
Baleni continued to condemn the extension of the resolution’s mandate to both the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran’s human rights and the ongoing fact-finding mission. These duties are tasked with investigating what the United Nations describes domestically as “serious and ongoing human rights abuses.”
“There is a significant lack of proportion between the claims made in the resolution and the actual human rights situation in Iran,” he said, labeling the document as deceptive and part of a broader campaign to trust Iran.
Rather than focusing on Iran, Bahrain urged the council to pay attention to the dire and devastating human rights conditions of Israel’s occupied Palestinian territory. “When the most serious violations of human rights are committed against Palestinians — the perpetrators enjoy full immunity — the UNHRC is misunderstood in scrutinizing Iran by pretending to be false,” he argued.
To conclude his remarks, Baleni urged Member States to resist politically motivated moves aimed at distorting the council’s mission. He emphasized the importance of maintaining UNHRC integrity by rejecting resolutions that serve geopolitical interests rather than genuine promotion of human rights.
