Tehran – Iran’s Vice-Speaker of Parliament Hamid Reza Haji Babaei called on members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to unite unilaterally and build a new world order based on justice, peace and multilateralism.
At the fourth NAM Parliamentary Network Conference on Monday in Uzbekistan, he highlighted the urgency of multilateral cooperation amid the introduction of a global crisis.
“In today’s complex and turbulent world, the erosion of international law and the failure of global decision-making bodies have created a vacuum,” Haji Babaei said. “To combat these threats, Nam must become a platform for responsible, future-looking actions.”
He warned that, depending on the choices that NAM members make now, the future will be shaped by coercion and anxiety, or collective peace and prosperity. “This is a historical moment of responsibility,” he said. “A single country cannot solve only global challenges.”
Haji Babaei emphasized that the world must escape grip on neocolonial and hegemony policies through collective political projects. “We need a fresh cooperative framework rooted in Bandung’s principles,” he said. “This isn’t one of many options. It’s the only viable path to move forward.”
He argued that the ideal of the establishment of Nam should not be diluted by the emergence of parallel regional organizations. “The movement must remain fixed in its original vision. Its parliamentary network must play a central role in shaping international policies and voice the global South.”
Iran has long embodied these values, he added. “For over 40 years, Iran has resisted unilateral and illegal sanctions by the United States. This resistance is not a citizen, but a universal battle for independence, justice and dignity.”
Addressing the Palestinian issue, Haji Babaei said that the continued oppression of the Palestinians was “one of the most brutal modern tragedies” and violated the core principles of the UN Charter and the Bandung Declaration.
“The atrocities of the Zionist regime in Gaza pose a serious threat to regional and international peace,” he said. “A fair solution should include a national referendum between all Palestinians and the creation of an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital. The proposals of the two states simply avoid the underlying issues.”
Haji Babaei has called on the Nam Parliament Network to actively support Palestine and to stand up against illegal, unilateral actions. “To fulfill that mission, the network must speak out against fraud and become a true parliamentary body that represents Nam’s ideal,” he said.
He added that only through bold and coordinated actions can the movement help shape a more fair international order. “As we enter a global transition period, networks need to assert themselves as key actors in decision-making and resist neocolonial policies.”
Iranian parliamentary delegations to the Nam Conference include Vice-Chair Hamid Reza Haji Babaei, Fada Hossein Maleki (Secretary-General of the Iranian Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) delegation), and MPS include Shamsedin Hossein, Mojtaba Rezai, Shamsedin Hosseini of Ebrahim Rezai, Ebrahim Rezai and Gorro.
Iran, Venezuela reaffirmed anti-imperialist ties and shared support for Palestine
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Iranian delegation met with the Vice President of the Venezuelan Parliament. Ebrahim Rezai, a spokesman for Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Haji Babaei praised Venezuela’s unstable opposition to imperialism and its support for Iran at the international forum.
Haji Babaei reiterated that Iran refused to meet in person with the US as Washington repeatedly violated the JCPOA. “We are only considering indirect negotiations to keep our community safe,” he said. “Iran pursues peace, but it responds decisively to hostile actions.”
The Venezuela vice president praised Iran’s anti-Zionist stance, welcomed the election of Masudo Pezeshkian as Iran’s new parliamentary speaker and commemorated the late President Ebrahim Raisi. She called the Gaza conflict genocide and pledged full support for Venezuela’s Palestine. “We resist the exploitation of the US and Iran is still an important ally,” she said.
Iran and Armenia are discussing deepening strategic cooperation
The Iranian delegation also met with their Armenian counterparts. Haji Babaei described Armenia as a strategic partner and a precious neighbour, highlighting the importance of maintaining historical connections, maintaining economic cooperation and resisting foreign interference.
He reiterated Iran’s opposition to the change to regional borders, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to peaceful, mere negotiations with the United States.
The Armenian vice-chairman expressed his gratitude for Iran’s support for Armenian territorial integrity, reaffirming his perception of Yerevan’s independent Palestinian state. She also expressed her interest in strengthening trade relations through the status of Iranian observers in the Eurasian Economic Union.
