Tehran – National Astronomy Week will be overdue from April 28th to May 5th under the theme of “Promoting Night Sky, Education and Science.”
International Astronomy Day is celebrated on March 3rd. However, in Iran, Astronomy Day is celebrated on May 2nd, simultaneously with National Teacher Day, highlighting the important role of education in promoting astronomy and astronomical activities, Mehr News Agency reported.
This year, the days of the week are not assigned a specific theme to promote creativity among participants when observing the week and planning events.
This week aims to promote interest in astronomy and provide people with the opportunity to experience the beauty of the sky at night. The event also offers people interested in astronomy and various amateur and specialized astronomical groups the opportunity to participate in observation sessions, speeches, exhibitions, educational workshops, and other activities related to astronomy.
Astronomy Day was launched in 1973 by Doug Berger, president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California.
The event was designed to stimulate curiosity about the stars and the sky, raise public awareness of astronomy, and connect enthusiasts and experts to share knowledge and passion.
The celebrations originally held in the fall were so successful that they were expanded to include spring events as well. Therefore, International Astronomy Day is now celebrated twice a year. It is celebrated once in spring and once again in autumn. Spring events are scheduled to occur on the Saturdays closest to the first quarter month from mid-April to mid-May, while fall events occur on the Saturdays closest to the September-October quarter month.
This year, Autumn Astronomy Day will be held on September 27th.
