TEHRAN – Alaedin Borgherdi, a member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Saturday that the 14th administration is particularly focused on making regional diplomacy a priority and strengthening cooperation with its neighbours.
“Expanding political, economic and cultural ties with neighboring nations is the cornerstone of Iran’s foreign policy,” Borgeldi told the IRNA as Iranian President Masudo Pezeshkian was reported to visit Azerbaijan on Monday.
The lawmakers emphasized that Azerbaijan has the potential for economic and trade collaborations with historical, religious and cultural ties with Iran, and is an important focus for Tehran.
“The President’s visit to Baku is extremely important and will play an influential role in strengthening bilateral relations,” Borgeldi said. “Neighborhood countries are important partners, especially during times of crisis, and Iran has always been trying to build close relationships across all sectors.”
He added that future trips have shown the continued efforts in recent years to stimulate relations between Iran and Azabaijan, expressing hopes for a “new, comprehensive phase of cooperation” between the two countries.
Borgeldi stressed that Iran has consistently pursued neighbourhood policies based on shared interests, saying the visit could open up fresh opportunities to expand engagement.
In a post on his X-account, Medi Sanaei, a deputy in political affairs in the presidential office, confirmed that President Pezeshkian will travel to Baku on April 28th at the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
“Several programs are scheduled and we hope that this visit marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the two brothers, particularly in areas such as trade and border department partnerships,” Sanaei writes.
