Tehran – A total of 138 earthquakes were recorded nationwide from May 3rd to 9th, according to the seismological network of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran.
Statistically, there are 114 earthquakes with a size less than 3. 20 earthquakes, between 3 and 4 sizes. Additionally, one earthquake ran between 5 and 6 sizes in the country, the IRNA reported.
Of the total tremors, one was on the Richter scale, 5 sized and occurred in Semnan on May 8th.
Of the states of the country, Semnan, 21, had the highest number of earthquakes, followed by Horasan Razabi in 18 Karman and 14 earthquakes.
During the same period, three earthquakes struck Tehran. No earthquakes have been recorded in West Azarbaijan, East Azarbaijan, Aldabil, North Horasan, Zanjan, Sistanbaruchestan, Kazbin, Gilan and Hamedan provinces.
According to the Earthquake Network of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran, a total of 6,272 earthquakes have been recorded nationwide in past calendar years (March 2024 – March 2025).
From the registered earthquakes, 150 were over four on the Richter scale. At least five earthquakes of 4.5 or more have occurred monthly in the country.
The Iranian plateau is located in a highly seismically active region of the world and is known not only for its major catastrophic earthquakes, but also for its natural disasters, particularly earthquake-related disasters.
Iran has about 2% of global earthquakes, but more than 6% of global earthquake casualties in the 20th century have been reported from Iranian earthquakes.
