Tehran – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has partnered with the Ministry of the Environment (DOE), which serves as the Iranian national designated authorities of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), to organize a workshop to explore effective national coordination mechanisms to promote stronger engagement with the GCF and other multilateral tactical institutions.
Organized with a GCF-funded project titled “Enhance Iran’s access to enhanced access to GCF with national ownership, knowledge-based policies and sound technology,” the workshop is part of a broader effort to strengthen Iran’s institutional preparation for effective access and utilising climate finances, announced by the FAO website, which was published in the Publishing Bureau on June 11.
In a message delivered on his behalf, Farrukh Toirov, the FAO representative of Islamic Republic of Iran, emphasized the importance of a preparatory programme to support partner countries. “Initiatives like this are relatively new frameworks launched by multilateral agencies to help countries develop climate financial planning and institutional capacity.”
“Corresponding to the Readiness II project include identifying national adaptation and mitigation priorities, conducting technical needs assessments, preparing technical action plans, developing a national low carbon management plan, and developing a direct access strategy. The success of these components relies on the active involvement of Iran’s National Climate Change Working Group (NCCWG) and the National Commission on Environmental Change (NCCFC).
Toirov’s message concluded with emphasis on the importance of the event, saying, “This workshop marks an important milestone in our joint efforts to support Iran’s climate resilience. We hope that it will become a long-term, constructive platform for collaboration fixed with domestic ownership and led by international best practices.”
The event led to the participation of key stakeholders, including representatives from government agencies, technical experts and national coordination agencies.
GCF to enhance climate resilience
Signed in August 2024, the project, entitled “Enhance access to GCFs with national ownership, knowledge-based policies and sound technology,” represents a key step in promoting national strategy to promote climate action and sustainable development.
Iran, like many countries, faces climate change challenges, tackling its negative effects, including exacerbating droughts and catastrophic flooding, and the problems of water shortage that affect ecosystems, biodiversity, food production and the economy.
In response, Iran’s National Strategic Action Plan on Climate Change 2017 outlines a comprehensive roadmap for climate adaptation and mitigation, subject to the ensuring financial and technical support under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
This transformational initiative between the Islamic Republic of Iran, the GCF and the FAO aims to strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change through a multi-faceted approach.
By fostering close coordination with GCF and other climate financial institutions, establishing direct access to GCF resources, and integrating climate change considerations into the development plan, the project aims to pave the way for strategic climate investment promotion.
Furthermore, by promoting access to advanced climate addiction technologies and engaging in both the target sector and private sector in both the target sector and the Climate Action Initiative, Iran aims to develop a robust pipeline of climate projects tailored to national priorities and GCF standards.
Expected results include the establishment of an enhanced national coordination mechanism, the development of strategies for direct access to the GCF, the updated GCF country programme, and the comprehensive National Climate Change Knowledge Hub (NCCKH).
The establishment of NCCKH serves as an important resource for disseminating technical knowledge and raising public awareness, ultimately contributing to the national resilience and sustainable development.
