TEHRAN – Iranian ambassador and permanent UN representative Amir Saeid Irabani strongly condemned the Israeli regime’s US-backed military attacks on Iran, describing it as a staggering violation of international law and the UN Charter.
In a formal letter submitted Thursday to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Security Council President Asim Iftihar Ahmad, Irabani enclosed a detailed report from Iranian Foreign Ministry documenting “illegal and coordinated attacks” in June.
“In the early hours of June 13, 2025, while Iranian families were sleeping, the Israeli regime announced a series of air, missile and drone strikes targeting housing, missile and drone strikes, civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear, with extensive military, intelligence and political support from the United States and certain Western countries.
According to Iranian envoys, the attack killed 1,100 civilians, including 132 women and 45 children, and injured more than 5,700 other people.
“These heinous crimes represent serious violations of multiple human rights instruments, including the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, the Geneva Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Contract on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR),” he said.
Irabani also noted that the second round of the US military attack on June 22 exacerbated the violation and targeted Iranian nuclear sites amid a wider escalation.
He emphasized that intentional targeting of Israeli homes, hospitals, ambulances, energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities under IAEA oversight constitutes war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression under international law.
The report described it as “a glimpse into the suffering that Iranian civilians, especially women and children, have endured,” and Irabani called for urgent accountability and enforcement of international legal norms.
Irabani spoke to the UN Security Council during an emergency session convened in response to the Israeli strike, demanding “specific and immediate action” from the international community to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent further deterioration of world peace and security.
He also criticized the “shady double standards” of Western countries, particularly the US, the UK and France, by turning a blind eye to Israeli attacks not only in Iran, but also in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.
The Israeli attack on June 13 marked one of the most extensive military campaigns against Iran to date, claiming the lives of hundreds of civilians, targeting both military and infrastructure.
In retaliation, Iran launched Operation True Promise III, a massive military response that struck the strategic Israeli forces, intelligence reporting agencies, industry and energy sites deep in occupied Palestinian territory.
The conflict escalated further on June 22nd. This has joined the fight by targeting multiple Iranian nuclear facilities despite ongoing nuclear talks with Tehran since April. In response, Iran attacked Qatar’s major US military bases with an accurate strike.
Hostilities halted on June 24th, when US President Donald Trump announced a unilateral halt of the attack, effectively informing him of Israel’s withdrawal from further attacks.
