TEHRAN – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in his address at the East Asia Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday, condemning the recent US military attacks on Iran, labeling the attack as “Treaty on Violation of International Law and the Treaty on Defects of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).”
Lavrov’s remarks follow the 12-day US-Israel war with Iran that began on June 13, as Israel launched a surprising strike on Iran, military and civilian sites.
“The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must ensure the security of Iran’s nuclear facilities and resolve the conflict through dialogue,” declared Lavrov, emphasizing that Iran (as Israel) is the NPT’s signature and therefore qualifies for peaceful nuclear technology.
His statement repeated the official Russian Foreign Ministry protests issued days ago, which denounced the US for “blatant violations of the UN Charter” and warned the strike that “had a major blow to the global non-proliferation regime.”
The June 22nd US bombing targeted nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, claiming that President Donald Trump would “eliminate” Iran’s enrichment capabilities.
Lavrov also called for an immediate extension of the vulnerable “ceasefire between Iran and Israel” that came into effect on June 24th after 12 days of hostility.
Moscow has consistently described the actions of the US and Israel as destabilizing “gunboat diplomacy,” and has criticised Washington’s justification for “preventive self-defense.”
Russia further argues that the attacks could hamper the IAEA’s surveillance mechanism and lead to Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT.
Russia recently supported a draft UN Security Council, which denies the strike, in partnership with China and Arab countries in the Parsia Gulf.
At the East Asia Summit, Lavrov’s Israeli war on Gaza and Palestinian territorial losses pose a major challenge to the international community. If Israel continues its reconciliation efforts, the territory will not remain for Palestinian authority. “He says.
