At least 14 people have been killed or gone missing in Dien Bien province, northern Vietnam, due to floods caused by heavy rain, provincial media reported on August 1.
The floodwaters quickly rose on the night of July 31 after torrential rains had been poured in hours, flooding the houses in low-lying areas and causing flash floods and landslides in the mountains of the province, reported the Tien Feng newspaper.
The mountain village of Xa Dung suffered the heaviest casualties, with one and six missing, the report said.
According to a statement from the state People’s Committee, traffic and transmission to several parts of the state are being blocked due to floods.
Two children from Hang Poo Xi village have been buried in a landslide and rescuers have yet to find their bodies, the statement said.
Media reports said ongoing heavy rains in the state prevented searching for missing people.
