Tehran – Iran has been appointed to represent the South Asian region of the Ramsar Convention Standing Committee. The country serves as a major representative of the region.
According to the IRNA, the election took place at the 15th Conference (COP15) with the Ramsar Conference on Wetlands held from July 23 to July 31 in Victoria Falls City from July 23 to July 31.
International wetlands and contribute to strengthening the country’s regional role in environmental decision-making.
As the most important executive and supervisory body of this international treaty, the Ramsar Convention Standing Committee plays an important role in managing and leading global wetland conservation efforts. This committee is responsible for maneuvering, making decisions and monitoring the implementation of Ramsar Convention resolutions between meetings of parties (COP) meetings.
The committee includes representatives from 18 countries selected from various geographical regions around the world, host countries for upcoming convention conferences, and partner international organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Wetlands International.
The Standing Committee meets once a week in Switzerland and makes strategic decisions between the two global apex of police officers.
As one of the three representatives of Asia, Iran will play an important role in the decision-making between sessions, monitoring the performance of the Ramsar Secretariat, managing financial resources and developing draft resolutions for future meetings.
Iran was elected Vice-Chair of COP15 by the Standing Committee of the Wetlands Treaty.
The meeting was held under the theme of “Protecting the Wetlands for Our Common Future.” The COP has adopted a new strategic plan for the treaty’s fifth action plan, 2025-2034.
The Ramsar Treaty on Wetlands was signed in 1971 in Ramsar city, Iran. This intergovernmental treaty provides a framework for international cooperation on wetland conservation. The conference was officially enacted in 1975.
Since then, many countries have become contractual parties to the treaty. Saudi Arabia is the 173rd, Isna reports.
Three Iranian cities, including Babor in northern Mazandaran, Kiashaal in northern Gilan, and Gandman in southwestern Chaharmahar Baktiari province, received the Wetland City Certification Certificate on the first day of COP15 of the Wetland Convention.
The city’s commitment to conservation, recognition, active involvement in sustainable practices and integration into wetland conservation plans is a strong candidate for this recognition.
The list of 31 newly accredited wetland cities was previously announced at the 64th Standing Committee.
