Tehran – The Iranian student won five gold medals in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) at the 18th International Olympics, marking the country’s second consecutive world championships.
The event took place in Mumbai, India from August 11th to 21st, and attracted over 300 high school students from 64 countries. During the event, students took part in several challenging exams covering the theoretical, observational, and data analysis aspects of astronomy.
The five-man Iranian team consisted of Ali Naderi Lordjani, Arsia Mirshamshi Kakaki, Hossein Soltani, Hossein Masoumi and Hirbod Hoodji. The first three students will be placed on the entire winner.
This astonishing achievement is the result of student dedication, family support, coaches’ tireless efforts and solidarity in the country’s scientific community that has re-posted the Iranian flag on the international stage, Pres Pres quoted a statement from Iran’s Ministry of Education on Thursday.
In a message of congratulations to the team and the Iranian state, the Young Scholars Club welcomed the great achievements as a source of pride and hope for Iran’s scientific future, expressing optimism that such achievements will continue in international academic fields.
The IOAA on the 17th was held in Vasulas, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 17th to 27th last year.
Over 250 students from 57 countries participated in the event. Iranian students won five gold medals and were ranked first in the world.
The International Olympics on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) are one of 12 International Science Olympiads. Founded by five countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, China, Poland), this first edition was held in Thailand in 2007.
The main goal of the IOAA is to promote a growing interest in astronomy and related STEM subjects, particularly through general education for young people, and to enhance the development of international contacts across different countries in promoting astronomy and astrophysics in schools. Through events like IOAA, brighter high school students are expected to become keen to study astronomy at the university level and become the next generation of astronomy and astrophysics experts.
Recent results
Iranian participants at the International Geoscience Olympiad (IESO) in Zing, China won four bronze medals.
IESO was held from August 7th to 17th.
The team consisted of Bardia Khalili, Parisa Sedqi, Fatemeh Hedayat Kakhaki and Zahra Goudarzipour.
Iranian students won gold, two silver and bronze medals in the 37th edition of Informatics (IOI) held in Sucre, Bolivia.
The event begins on July 27th and ends on August 3rd. A total of 330 contestants from 84 countries participated in this year’s event.
Amir-Ali Asgari won the gold medal, Mani Zare and Hamed Ghafari won the silver medal, while Kiarash Rezaei won the bronze medal, Isna reported.
Iran won two silver medals and two bronze medals at the 8th International Economics Olympiad (IEO) 2025, held from July 20-29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
This year, 68 countries participated in IEO. Mohsen Payandeh-Peyman and Abolfazl Modir-Roosta won silver medals, while Parsa Sedaqat and Alireza Ahmadi won bronze medals, the IRNA reported.
The four Iranian students won three gold and silver medals at the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2025), ranking second in 81 countries from 3rd in 2024.
According to Pana, Siabash Pezeshpur, Ali Soleimanzadeh Kalafraudi and Ali Akbar Nourorahi won gold medals while Radin Bayani won silver medals.
Five Iranian students won silver medals at the 55th International Physics Olympics, ranking 11th in the world.
IPHO 2025, held in Paris from July 18th to 24th, attracted 440 candidates from over 90 countries.
Mohammad-Hassan Sadeqinejad Simaki, Arya Zarabi, Ilya Qashee, Mohammah-Hassan Golabdar and Milad Mohammadi have won silver medals, Irib reported.
Iran won two gold medals, three silver medals and a bronze medal at the 66th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2025) held in Australia from July 10-20.
Bardia Khosh-Eqbal and Mehdi Aqajanloo won the gold medal, with Mohammad-Reza Attaranzadeh, Mohammad-Sajad Memari and Amir-Hossein Zarei winning the silver medal, while Parsa Tajallaei won the bronze medal.
The team was ranked second in the 3rd International Mathematics Summer Camp (IMSC) held in Beijing, China from June 20th to July 12th, 2025.
Bardia Khosh-Eqbal won the gold medal, Mehdi Aqajanloo, Parsa Tajallaei, Mohammad-Reza Attaranzadeh and Mohammad-Sajad Memari won the silver medal, while Amir-Hossein Zarei won the bronze medal.
IMSC 2025 has attracted over 300 people, including students and lecturers, from 32 countries, including Belarus, Belgium, Cameroon, Germany, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, the United States, Rome, Poland, and Uzbekistan.
