Tehran – Senior Iranian lawmakers say the parliament fully supports any decision by the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) to withdraw from the treaty on nuclear shortages of nuclear weapons (NPT) in response to the reinvigoration of snapback sanctions mechanisms.
Esmail Kowsari, a member of the Congressional National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, and members of the IRGC, told reporters that the final decision depends on the social media, but Congress is ready to approve and implement the country’s broader strategic choices.
“The decision to leave the NPT is on the best national security council,” Kousari said. “But if such a decision is made, Congress certainly supports it and acts in harmony with the overall policy of the country.”
Lawmakers recalled that the United States unilaterally abandoned the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) when then-President Donald Trump quit his contract during his first term. “The actions meant that the US no longer granted the agreement and negated it,” Kowsari said. “Europeans have also failed to respect their commitments and have once again violated their obligations. Now they want to take further steps beyond the law. But this is an excuse, especially after a 12-day war defeat.”
Kowsari noted that Snapback MMechanim includes a re-challenges of sanctions and restrictions on shipping and exports. “But all of these steps have already been taken against us before and have not been led anywhere,” he added.
He emphasized that discussions will take place within the social network regarding the possibility of NPT withdrawal with the participation of the Speaker of the Congress and the head of the National Security Committee of Parliament. “Once consensus is reached, Congress will definitely provide full support,” he emphasized.
Looking back at the past decade, Kousari said that while Iran fully adheres to its duties, the JCPOA has become pointless because the US and Europe did not do the same. “Instead of lifting the sanctions, they just added them,” he said. “So, if there is a legal review, the foundation of the problem will collapse and mechanisms like snapback are unjustified.”
The lawmakers also issued warnings to the Western government. “We also know how to resist if the other side wants to act through force. The Islamic Republic of Iran has never started a war or a breached agreement, and are trying to act illegally and achieve ominous goals through protection, military force and artillery fire.
Snapback is a psychological war: Iranian Judicial spokesman
In another statement, judicial spokesman Asgal Jahangir condemned the European initiative at the United Nations, explaining it was illegal and politically motivated.
“Recently, three European members of P5+1 have moved to activate the snapback mechanism for Iranian people,” he said. “This behavior is against international norms and has no legal validity. Seven years after the illegal withdrawal from the US JCPOA, Europe should be held responsible, but instead chose to activate the snapback.”
Jahangir said the measure was intended to degrade morale rather than put any actual pressure on them. “The snapback mechanism is more of a psychological tool than a real threat. The enemy wants to target our people’s minds through noise and propaganda, but the experience shows that the Iranian country has bravely resisted sanctions and difficulties.”
He also called for vigilance in the field of intelligence. “In this psychological war, we must adopt a smart media strategy,” he emphasized. “The media must not allow anyone to take the line that undermines the unity of the people.”
