Tehran – Iran’s permanent mission of Islamic Republic to the United Nations issued a statement on the recent UN General Assembly Resolution on Palestine, highlighting that a genuine solution must self-determination of Palestinians’ inviolable rights and firmly reject forced displacement.
In its speech, Iran’s mission criticized the right-of-occupying policies of “systematic discrimination, territorial expansionism, and neglect of international humanitarian norms,” warning that such actions threatened the value of humanity, justice and integrity.
The statement highlighted that nearly two years of relentless Israeli military attacks, particularly in Gaza, have led to massive killings, refuge, starvation and extensive destruction of civilian lives and infrastructure. He further argued that repeated attacks on Israel’s neighbours deepened regional instability and put international peace and security at risk.
Iran highlighted decades of concessions, peace initiatives and normalization efforts have failed to stop Israel’s “crime and illegal occupation.” Instead, he said these efforts encourage expansionism and colonial policies. Tehran repeatedly pointed to the Security Council’s denial and steady supply of arms to Israel as evidence that the current international approach fails to achieve the stated goals.
According to the statement, fair and lasting peace requires binding on UN resolutions that address the underlying causes of conflict, hold Israel accountable and protect Palestinian rights.
Iran has reiterated the consistent demands of immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, unhindered humanitarian access and reconstruction efforts to respect Palestinian sovereignty. It reaffirmed support for what Palestinians call “justified resistance” to occupations, foreign interventions and apartheid policies, and emphasized that peace can only come by ending the occupation and achieving full Palestinian independence.
Citing UN document S/2019/862, Tehran again proposed to hold a free and comprehensive referendum across Palestine, with the participation of all former Muslims, Christians and Jews as the only democratic and enduring path.
The mission concluded that the international community should encourage the UN Security Council to enroll in Palestine as a full member and hold Israel accountable for “war crimes, genocide and long-term illegal occupation.”
The statement comes after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Friday in support of the establishment of a Palestinian state under a “two-state solution.” Iran, along with Iraq and Tunisia, has declined to vote. Tehran has repeatedly maintained that the Palestinian issue cannot be resolved through such a framework, and argues that the two states’ plans fail to secure full rights for Palestinians and do not address the core issues of Israeli occupation.
According to Iran, the resolution overlooks the continued presence of Zionists on Palestinian lands. Palestine lands are described as part of a wider colonial project in West Asia, the root cause of the regional crisis. He deliberately ignored the roles of Israel and the United States, denounced the drafters as the main obstacle to achieving the two state formulas.
“As long as the occupation and apartheid policies continue, the two states’ plans will not succeed in ending the conflict,” the statement said. Tehran pointed out that under international law, people under occupation have the right to resist the colonial and apartheid system of self-determination.
The statement also addressed the events of October 7th, claiming that Palestinian actions must be seen as a legitimate self-defense or an inevitable result of Israeli attacks. Iran concluded that the only durable solution would be to end the occupation on all Palestinian lands and hold a national referendum that includes the displaced Palestinians who have returned to their homelands.
“The only democratic solution to the Palestinian issue will be possible through this path,” the mission declared, reaffirming Iran’s support for Palestinian resistance groups.
