TEHRAN – At a meeting held on Monday, President Masuud Pezeshkian met with Ayatollah Seiyed Ali Khamenei, leader of the Islamic Revolution, and attended the 79th United General Assembly (UNGA) in coordination with the president’s stance for his next visit to New York.
An unofficial report states that Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized the importance of travel and emphasized the need for Iranian delegations to vehemently present the country’s status on the international stage. President Pezeschkian is expected to give a large-scale speech outlining the views on regional and global issues of the Islamic Republic, and Gaza’s ongoing genocide is positioned as a central theme in his address.
This year’s UNGA will be convened under the iconic flag of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. However, the session is widely viewed as a angstless indictment that international organizations failed to fulfill their founding mission. The organization faces what many observers describe as the lowest point of reliability, and has proven unable to stop the Israeli regime’s US-backed mass murder campaign in Gaza
Despite overwhelming international condemnation and a series of resolutions passed by the UN General Assembly calling for an immediate ceasefire, the UN Security Council is systematically paralyzed by the United States. Washington repeatedly used its veto to protect its ally, Israel, from meaningful consequences, effectively giving it a green light for the continued massacre of the Palestinians.
Since the Israeli regime launched a brutal attack in October 2023 following the Palestinian resistance campaign, the US has not only provided diplomatic cover, but has also poured billions of dollars in emergency military aid to Tel Aviv. Additionally, the United States consistently blocked any effort to hold the Israeli administration accountable at international forums, including the UN Security Council.
Israel has been killed between 66,000 and 680,000 Palestinians in the past two years, bombing Gaza civilian structures to prevent them from residing inhabited.
This unwavering support has allowed Israel to spread violence across West Asia with immunity, including aggressive attacks on Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran, bringing the entire region to the brink of wider conflict in the past few months. Future General Assemblies are therefore set against the backdrop of a crippling multilateral system, and the principles of the UN Charter are trampled down by the very forces that claim to support them.
President Pezeschkian’s speech is expected to bring sharp criticism of this hypocrisy, and the US and its client structure are directly responsible for the collapse of international law in Gaza and the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe. Many other countries are also expected to address the need for fundamental reform and the end of American hegemony over international organizations.
