TEHRAN – A total of 142 earthquakes were recorded across the country in the week from September 27 to October 3, according to the Earthquake Network of the Tehran University Institute of Geophysics.
Statistically, 122 earthquakes of magnitude less than 3. 15 earthquakes of magnitude between 3 and 4. Four earthquakes with magnitude between 4 and 5 and another with magnitude between 5 and 6 occurred in the country, IRNA reported.
Of the totals, two had a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale. This occurred on October 3rd in Isfahan province.
Among the country’s provinces, Isfahan at 27 years experienced the highest number of earthquakes, followed by Kerman (16 earthquakes), Khorasan Razavi, Semnan, and Fars Provinces, each experiencing 10 earthquakes.
During the same period, an earthquake struck Tehran province. No earthquakes were recorded in Ardibil, Ilam, Qazvin, Kermanshah, Gilan and Zanjan provinces.
According to the Seismological Network of the Institute of Geophysics of the University of Tehran, a total of 6,272 earthquakes were recorded across the country in the past calendar year (March 2024 – March 2025).
From the registered earthquakes, 150 were above 4 on the Richter scale. At least five earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher occurred every month in the country.
The Iranian plateau is located in a highly seismically active region of the world and is known not only for its major devastating earthquakes, but also for its natural disasters, especially those related to earthquakes.
Approximately 2% of the world’s earthquakes occur in Iran, but more than 6% of the world’s earthquake casualties in the 20th century were reported from earthquakes in Iran.
