TEHRAN – The head of the Department of Environment (DOE) said that peace and the environment are two fundamental pillars of human survival, as without peace no conservation plan is sustainable, and without a healthy environment, peace cannot be sustained.
“The world is currently facing an environmental crisis, war, climate change and economic inequality. No country is immune from these threats,” ISNA quoted Shina Ansari as saying.
The official made the remarks while addressing a conference held in Tehran on Monday to commemorate United Nations Development Day and the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
The official noted that environmental degradation leads to food insecurity, poverty, migration and political instability, stressing that war is the biggest threat to the region and the world’s ecosystems.
“Countries in West Asia have long witnessed the Zionist regime’s aggression and violations of human rights and international law. Israel’s military attacks have not only killed innocent people, but also destroyed the land and environment. Water and soil pollution, destruction of forests and agricultural land, and release of toxic substances are some of the effects of war on the environment. The environment is the silent victim of these crimes,” Ansari said.
He stressed that Iran has always emphasized the link between peace, development and environmental protection, and believes that a sustainable development plan is not possible without a “just peace” and the elimination of aggression.
“Despite sanctions and undue international pressure that prevent Iran from accessing financial resources, new technologies, and global mechanisms to combat climate change, our country has remained steadfast on its path to carbon reduction and adaptation to climate change.”
The official went on to say that today, more than ever, the world needs cooperation, mutual trust and respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter. Tackling the climate crisis, curbing war and protecting the planet is only possible with true solidarity between nations. Environmental security should be accepted as an integral part of human and international security.
Emphasizing that peace, justice and cooperation are essential to protect the planet, Ansari said, “The Earth is our common home. Let us protect it with peace and wisdom.”
symbol of hope for world unity
United Nations Day, October 24th, commemorates the entry into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945. The United Nations was formally born into existence with the ratification of this founding document by a majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.
No other world organization has the legitimacy, convening power, and normative influence of the United Nations. No other global organization can give so many people hope for a better world and create the future we all want. The urgency for all nations to come together and fulfill the promise of national unity has never been greater today.
