TEHRAN – Department of Environment (DOE) Secretary Shina Ansari will participate in the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, scheduled to be held in Belem, Brazil from November 6 to 21.
Mr. Ansari will also be attending the Belem Climate Summit, which will be held from November 6th to 7th. The event will bring together world leaders, scientists, non-governmental organizations and civil society to discuss priority actions to tackle climate change.
COP30 will focus on the efforts needed to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, the announcement of new National Action Plans (NDCs), and progress on funding commitments made at COP29.
The COP30 action agenda will be organized around six key areas that reflect the breadth and urgency of action needed to fulfill the collective commitments under the Paris Agreement and previous COPs. Forest, ocean and biodiversity management. Transforming agriculture and food systems. Building resilience in cities, infrastructure and water. Promote human and social development. Cross-cutting enablers and accelerators.
In August, Mr. Ansari and members of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) discussed ways to strengthen the country’s participation in COP30.
During the meeting, Mr. Ansari highlighted the potential for active participation of the private sector at COP30. He also noted that the current government has outsourced the Climate Change Negotiations Commission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and said the Ministry of Energy is trying to change the commission’s responsibilities and take responsibility.
The official proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperative activities, especially joint research projects, between the two organizations.
Meanwhile, ICCIMA Director-General Samad Hassanzadeh said that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an important infrastructure measure and stressed that the private sector has significant capacity to actively participate at COP29.
Presenting the country’s investment capabilities and opportunities at a global level, leveraging technology in content distribution, establishing an Iranian pavilion at COP30 to hold negotiations, modernizing aging ships and reducing pollution and optimizing the country’s economy are no longer necessary. Among the issues discussed were the elimination of unnecessary regulations, the creation of a joint standing committee between DOE and ICCIMA, an agreement with international stakeholders to create a voluntary carbon market that would connect global markets, and efforts to overcome resistance to international environmental action.
