In 2024, seven more cancer drugs will be added to the Rare Disease Fund’s list, with 70% of their costs covered by health insurance.
IRIB news agency quoted Mohammad Esmail Kameri, an employee of the health insurance organization, as saying, “Currently, a total of 90 anticancer drugs, including these seven drugs, are covered by the Rare and Incurable Disease Fund, and the health insurance covers 70 to 95 percent of their costs.”
The number of health centers contracted with the Health Insurance Authority increased by 7% in the past Iranian calendar year (ending March 19) compared to the previous year.
More than 53,000 centers have signed contracts with health insurance organizations so far this year, IRNA said, citing Kayvan Tajbaksh, an official at the organization.
Health insurance contracts are entered into with government, non-government, private, and charitable organizations to provide services.
Centers include clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, rehabilitation centers, and all medical centers.
“As the new contract form approved by the Supreme Council of Insurance is announced, we expect that the number of health centers participating in the contract with the Health Insurance Organization will increase,” Tajbakhsh said.
He said 13,931 independent and affiliated pharmacies, 20,804 clinics, 2,049 clinics, 2,446 independent laboratories, and 4,261 rehabilitation centers have signed contracts with the Health Insurance Corporation.
With support from the World Health Organization, the National Cancer Control Program was developed, setting out the roadmap for the Ministry of Health until Iranian Calendar 1404 (March 2025-March 2026).
The program aims to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality while improving patients’ quality of life and can serve as a model for other countries, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
This plan included two important documents: “Building a National Cancer Medical Network” and “Developing Cancer Human Resources,” which resulted in the establishment of early diagnosis centers.
The Health Insurance Corporation has been working with the Ministry of Health to provide important and critical services in a variety of areas.
Services provided so far include providing free insurance to low-income families, paying medical bills for infertile couples, providing services to people with disabilities, supporting patients with rare diseases, and providing services to foreign nationals.
