TEHRAN – Canada has announced new sanctions against Iran, targeting individuals and groups supporting Tehran’s military operations.
Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly revealed that sanctions have affected three individuals and four entities. This claims to be related to a procurement network that supplies the Islamic Revolutionary Security Force (IRGC) with advanced military technology. Ottawa claims that these networks will promote the transfer of weapons to Russia for use in the Ukrainian War.
The Canadian government emphasized that similar actions and new measures have been consistent with Western allies, including the US, UK and the European Union. The move reflects the growing Western efforts to limit Iran’s military and economic impacts.
Just before the Canada announcement, the US Treasury Department’s Foreign Assets Office (OFAC) imposed sanctions on six Hong Kong- and China-based entities, citing its connection with Iran’s military procurement activities.
Beyond military ties with Russia, Jolie also spoke about Iran’s activities in West Asia, accusing her of “supporting terrorist groups and threatening regional and international security.” Canada sees resistance groups fighting Israeli occupation as terrorists.
The latest sanctions claimed by Canada are targeting networks that claim the IRGC will help them acquire advanced weapons.
The newly announced restrictions will be added to Canada’s sanctions growth list against Iran. With these latest measures, Canada is currently sanctioning 208 individuals and 254 Iranian companies. Sanctions block assets held in Canada and prohibit transactions involving listed individuals and organizations.
