Barzani made his speech in a speech at the Tehran Dialogue Forum (TDF) held on Sunday at the venue of the Institute for Politics and International Studies (IPI) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tehran’s capital, Tehran.
“One of our important principles is not to allow the Kurdistan region to be a basis for threatening its neighbors, particularly the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.
“Yesterday we held a meeting in Tehran and everyone acknowledged that we have taken good measures in the area of security. The territory of the Kurdistan region was not a source of danger in the Islamic Republic,” Barzani added.
He pointed out that Iran was one of the first countries to help Iraq in a war with Dash terrorist groups, and emphasized that “it clearly stated that relations between Iran and the Kurdistan region were good.”
Barzani further said that after Iranian President Masudo Pezeshkian’s visit to Erbil, Iraq, “we are witnessing the expansion and development of bilateral relations at all levels.”
He also said that expert-level meetings will be held in Sanandazi, an Iranian city in northwestern Iran, in the near future.
Iran and Iraq signed a security agreement in Baghdad in March 2023, covering coordination to protect shared borders.
Security agreements require the complete disarmament and relocation of anti-Iranian terrorist groups operating in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
