Hainan – a delegation of foreign journalists was offered a unique opportunity to meet with Muhammad Yunus of the Chinese province of southern China.
A global pioneer in social business and economic development, Professor Yunus engaged in heartfelt discussions with international reporters.
He welcomed China’s “important role” in promoting multilateralism that encourages Asian countries to speak up to Asian countries to avoid monopolising by major powers. The Chief Advisor also called for reform of the United Nations system to end an era of one-sidedness.
He said the emphasis is on implementing institutional reforms and fostering future pre-election economic recovery in relation to the current government transition in Bangladesh.
The conference was arranged by the China International Press and Communications Centre (CIPCC), which functions under the China Public Diplomatic Association (CPDA).
Earlier on Thursday, Yunus met with China’s deputy prime minister, Din Xuexiang. Ding described China and Bangladesh as good neighbors, good friends and good partners.
He added that Beijing is willing to work with Dhaka to strengthen political mutual trust, strengthen practical cooperation and promote closer culture and exchange between people.
Yunus said Bangladesh is sticking to one China’s principles, which have expressed its own preparations to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Yunus departed Bangladesh for China on Wednesday and gave a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Boao Forum (BFA) Annual Conference held in the town of Boao on Thursday.
Mainstream Bangladeshi media have described Yunus’ visit to China by Bangladeshi leaders over the past 50 years as “the most important visit.”
A provisional government was established in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled after weeks of violent turmoil in August 2024.
China welcomed the formation of a provisional government the day after the oath, saying it was “stricken with the principles of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.”
China’s role as a flag bearer in promoting peace and stability has been in the spotlight over the past few years. Beijing is currently trying to help Bangladesh overcome domestic problems and improve relations with its neighbors.
