BEIJING – China’s important contribution to globalization and multilateralism advances, particularly in response to the unilateral US actions, was highlighted at a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing on Friday.
The Chinese president welcomed Spanish Prime Minister of Diayotai’s Guesthouse, while President Donald Trump’s trade war was facing serious criticism.
President XI reaffirmed the importance of strengthening China-European Union relations with a particular emphasis on Spain.
“As the international situation becomes more complicated and unstable, it is becoming increasingly important for China and Spain to develop healthy and stable relationships. This year marks the 20th anniversary of China-Spain’s comprehensive strategic partnership. China is ready to work with Spain to build a more strategically resilient, dynamic, comprehensive strategic partnership and to contribute more to both the compensatory of both interm to Imptis intime intime. Peace, stability, development,” he said.
President XI called for China and the EU to jointly resist unilateral bullying.
“China and the EU need to step up to international responsibility, jointly protect the economic globalization and the international trade environment, and jointly reject unilateral and bullying actions. China and the EU should defend international fairness, justice and international rules and order, as well as their own legitimate rights and interests,” the Chinese president told Sanchez.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized the importance of strengthening Beijing and the European Union relations with a particular emphasis on Spain’s contribution to this partnership.
Xi stressed that the tariff war would not bring victors, and argued that his country would not succumb to any form of unjust control.
“There are no winners in the tariff war. Opposition to the world only leads to self-assessment. China’s development over the past 70 years has been the result of independence and effort, not favoring others. China is not fierce from unfair restraint. Regardless of changes in the external environment, China will remain confident, continue to succeed and maintain its own problems.
On his part, the Spanish Prime Minister expressed strong support for the European Union’s strategic partnership, particularly highlighting the relationship between Spain and China. Sanchez also defended President Xi Jinping’s position on the futility of the trade war.
“China is an important partner in the EU. Spain has always supported the stable development of EU-China relations. The EU declares openness and free trade, supports multilateralism, and opposes the imposition of unilateral tariffs. There is no winner in the trade war. It maintains the common interests of the international community, like climate change and poverty alleviation,” he said.
The repeated stances between President XI and the Spanish Prime Minister on the trade war are consistent with President Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on China and several other countries.
Beijing has raised tariffs on US imports to 125% in response to President Trump’s implementation of tariffs, which amounted to more than 145% of goods from Chinacinth, who returned to the White House in January. He has increased tariffs on Chinese imports to more than 145%, strengthening the serious trade dispute between Washington and Beijing.
In response, China has increased its additional tariffs on products imported from the US, effective from April 12, from 84% to 125%.
“China does not want to fight these wars, but they are not scared of them,” Lin Jiang, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Friday.
“If the US really wants to resolve problems through dialogue, it must stop the application of extreme pressure and reckless actions. These tactics do not work in China. Any dialogue must be based on equality, mutual respect, and mutual relations.
Lin also made clear China’s position on the imposition of retaliatory tariffs.
“Our countermeasure against US bullying is not only to protect China’s legitimate rights and interests, but also to protect international rules and order, to protect the common interests of all countries, and to protect global equity and justice,” he pointed out.
