TEHRAN – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced that Iran and Russia are actively working to abolish visa requirements between the two countries, marking key steps to strengthen bilateral ties and boosting tourism.
Speaking to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut at a joint press conference held in Moscow on Friday, Lavrov emphasized that Tehran and Moscow’s relationship has reached levels that fit the strategic partnership.
“In spite of the challenging local circumstances, our cooperation between the two countries remains strong and progressive,” Lavrov said. “We are currently finalizing a tourism agreement aimed at removing the visa requirements between Russia and Iran.”
In September 2023, the two countries implemented an agreement allowing visa-free group trips for tourists in Iran and Russia. The transaction allowed 50 to 50 travelers from both countries to visit for up to 15 days without the need for a visa. The proposed new arrangement could expand this cooperation, leading to individual visa-free travel, and further promote cultural exchanges and economic relationships.
Officials from both countries have expressed interest in deepening tourism cooperation, and Iran has recently aimed to attract more Russian tourists.
