Egypt has asked the US to intervene to prevent Libya’s eastern parliament from ratifying its maritime contract with Turkey, regional officials told the Middle Eastern eyes.
Egyptian officials told Me on Wednesday that Cairo is concerned that if Libya’s eastern parliament ratifies a deal first carved into by East Libya’s rival western government in 2019, it could cause tensions in the East Mediterranean as Egypt tackles fallout from the war in Gaza and Sudan.
One Egyptian and an official in the region told Mee that Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatti had raised the topic of US intervention in a call last month with Massad Boulos, a senior US adviser to Africa.
They said Boulos said he would call Khalifa Haftar, the de facto ruler of East Libya, to discuss the issue.
