Tehran – Damavando’s historic Cheberi Tower is scheduled to undergo restoration on Saturday.
Ali Afzali, director of the Damavand Cultural Heritage Office, announced that a restoration of Cheveli is being planned following recent reviews of the dome, walls, basements and surrounding areas and contractor selection.
Afzali also said there are 160 registered historic sites within Damavand County, of which 82 are registered nationwide. These sites include monuments such as houses, castles, mountains, archaeological sites, ancient trees, baths, mosques and the centuries-old Sheberg Tower.
He described the Sheberi Tower as a unique monument to Iran, featuring unique architecture and masonry techniques known as the “freestone” structure. The tower was officially registered as a national heritage site in 1972.
The tower is an octagonal roofed grave of about 10 meters, dedicated to Abubakr al-Shibli, a 4th and 5th centuries Sufi Mystic and former governor of Damavand. Below the main structure is the basement (saldub). The monument is a remnant of the Samanid period and is architecturally similar to the historic structures in Bukhara.
Afzari said once the restoration and landscaping is complete, Shebery Tower will serve as a cultural center and hub for the county’s handicraft activities and cultural programs.
