Israeli writer David Grossman has declared the attack on the Gaza Strip “genocide,” increasing the chorus of war denunciation.
In an interview published Friday at Italy’s Daily La Republica, Grossman said Gaza’s bloodshed had broken his “heart.”
“For years, I have refused to use the term ‘genocide’. But now, after reading in the newspaper, after images I saw, after talking to people there, after talking to them,” Middle East Eye reported.
“I want to speak as someone who did everything possible to call Israel a genocide, and now, with enormous pain and a broken heart, I have to face what’s going on right in front of my eyes: “Genocide.” That’s the word avalanche.
When I read the death toll in Gaza, I asked him what he thought, he replied: “I feel bad.”
At least 98 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours, with 1,079 more injured, reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Of those numbers, 39 were those seeking assistance.
The latest death has resulted in the overall casualties of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023, causing 148,722 people to be injured.
Hospitals in Gaza also recorded seven deaths, including children, as a result of Israel’s stabbing hunger in the past 24 hours.
Grossman said the scenes of starvation and murder in Gaza resonated with him in particular.
“We put together the words “Israel” and “hunger” and do so based on our history, our sensitivity to human suffering, our moral responsibility we have to all humans, not just Jews… all this is devastating,” he said.
Grossman is primarily because there is no alternative.
