The Iraqi government announced on Sunday that the US-led United Nations mission in Iraq will officially end in September 2025, according to Prime Minister Hussein Alawi, adviser to Mohammed Shea Al Sudani, as reported by the state-run Iraqi news agency (INA).
Alawi confirmed that the existence of the coalition at Baghdad’s headquarters and Ain Assad Air Force Base will end in September, in line with the government’s plan to strengthen Iraqi troops and strengthen the transition to a bilateral defense partnership, under an agreement between Iraq and coalition members.
“The Iraqi government is working on a programme that builds its military and ends the mission of the coalition, and is shifting its relationship with the Allied to a stable bilateral defense arrangement led by political, economic and cultural ties,” the advisor told INA.
The Prime Minister’s advisor outlined a two-stage timeline agreed by Iraq and the Union, with the aim of the first withdrawal phase scheduled for September 2025 and complete completion by September 2026.
