TEHRAN – Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abour Gate on Sunday condemned the “silence and inaction” of the international community, saying Israel was encouraged to continue its “crime.”
Aboul Gheit made his remarks during a prep session for the emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha following the Israeli airstrikes in Qatar’s capital on Tuesday. He emphasized that Arab and Islamic countries should “focus on stopping Israel from continuing the heinous and dishonorable war in Gaza.”
He added that the Doha Summit should send a clear message of solidarity between Qatar and Arab-Islam in the wake of Israel’s “act of war” and violation of Qatar’s sovereignty.
Speaking during the session, Qatar Prime Minister Mohamed Al Thani called Israel’s attacks “state terrorism” and claimed that Tel Aviv “has no red line at all.”
Leaders from all over the region gathered in Doha for a two-day summit. This will continue through Monday, discussing the formal response to Israel’s strike.
Israel launched airstrikes in residential areas as Hamas leaders convened in the Doha office to discuss a deal proposed by US President Donald Trump, which aimed to end Israel’s two-year war in Gaza. The proposed deal would release all the prisoners of Hamas held in exchange for Israel’s Palestinian prisoners with a ceasefire.
The attack killed five Hamas members and Qatari guards, but missed the Hamas leadership that it was aiming for.
The UN Security Council unanimously condemned the strike on Thursday. The Trump administration has tried to distance itself from the attack, but the evidence refers to coordination between Israeli forces and the US Central Command (CENTCOM), including cooperation with US controlled air defense systems.
The attack on Qatar highlights the ambitions of Israel’s regional, commonly referred to as the “Israel Greater” vision. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly supported this expansionist agenda, potentially expanding Israeli borders to encompass parts of Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
