Tehran – The Regional Cultural Council of Tehran has designated Mehr 14 (October 6) as “Tehran Day” to commemorate the city’s historic role in the establishment of Iran’s constitutional system and its designation as its capital.
The decision was announced at a council meeting with Tehran interim Friday prayer leader Seyed Mohammad Hassan serving as Aurabifad, attended by Governor Mohammad Sadegu Motamedian.
Motamedian said the new anniversary will be used to highlight Tehran’s historic, cultural and tourist assets. “Tehran Day is an opportunity to reintroduce the historical, cultural and tourism capabilities of the Iranian capital,” he said.
The Council stated that, after the signing of the constitutional decree by Qajar Ruler Mozaffar Ad-Din Shah, when the first session of the National Council was held at Golestan Palace, the date was chosen to coincide with October 6, 1906 (14 MEHR 1285 in the Iranian calendar).
The parliament, according to the council, was the first step to drafting the Iranian constitution and formally designating Tehran as the nation’s capital.
Authorities said the annual event will be marked with cultural and educational programs aimed at highlighting the role of the capital in Iran’s modern history.
The Persian Constitution of 1906 was the first constitution of the sublime state of Iran (Persia) and the result of the Persian Constitutional Revolution.
