Italian defense minister Guido Closett condemned an overnight drone attack on the global smooth fleet heading to Gaza in an attempt to deliver aid, Al Jazeera reported.
In a statement Wednesday, Crossett said he would redirect Italian Navy ships to the fleet and provide possible assistance. His comments came after global Sumud Flotilla reported an explosion and communication interference.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said there were “Italian citizens along with Italian citizens along with members of the Parliament and MEP” among pro-fighter activists who reported hearing a nearby explosion while departing from Greece late Tuesday.
Global Sumud Flotilla reported that it had heard more than dozens of nearby explosions as it sailed from Greece late Tuesday.
There have also been reported damage caused by dropping “unconfirmed objects” on the deck.
“To ensure their security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already notified Israeli authorities that operations entrusted to the Israeli military must be carried out in accordance with international law and principles of absolute caution,” the statement said in the statement.
“Minister Tajani has called for information to be gathered at the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv and repeated previous requests to the Israeli government to ensure absolute protection of personnel on board.”
