The Uruguayan government issued a statement on Thursday expressing serious concern over Israel’s interception of the global Samud Fleet, a humanitarian mission sailing towards Gaza, with the aim of providing assistance to a population destroyed by war and hunger.
Once made up of 44 ships and more than 500 activists from around 40 countries, the convoy was already facing multiple attacks at sea. By Friday morning, Israeli forces had completely dismantled their fleet, raiding and seizing Marinette – a Polish messed up ship with six crew members – the last one is still in the sea. Live stream video shows soldiers boarding the ship and restraining the ship. In total, hundreds of activists from dozens of boats have been arrested.
Uruguayan’s Foreign Ministry said it was closely monitoring the situation and was in direct contact with the three Uruguayan citizens who participated in the initiative, their families, the Foreign Ministry of Other Participating Countries and Israeli officials. He emphasized that the government is working to ensure full protection of citizens’ diplomacy and consuls.
“Uruguay reiterates its call on the Israeli government to respect the physical integrity and security of participants in this initiative and to seek full respect for international humanitarian law,” the statement said.
Uruguay’s stance highlights the growing international concern as aid groups warn that humanitarian delivery restrictions are deepening the crisis in Gaza.
