Iraqi politician Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the National Wisdom Movement, gave a speech at the start of the election campaign, calling for national unity, moderation and resistance to foreign interference. His remarks came as the United States ramps up efforts to disarm the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) following recent developments in Lebanon and Syria.
Hakim emphasized the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by Ahl al-Bayt supporters in Iraq, saying:
“Without their recognition, sacrifice and perseverance, we would not have defeated terrorism.”
Established under the leadership of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the PMF was formed to fight ISIS and played a key role in defending Iraq during its most critical security challenges.
Hakim called for an Iraq that respects majority identity while ensuring the dignity of all its citizens. He warned against the return of dictatorship in any form, stressing that no individual or group can claim honor unless shared by all.
He introduced his campaign slogan “Don’t miss the opportunity” and rejected claims that Ahl al-Bayt supporters were unfit to govern, saying their contribution was crucial in resisting bombings, ISIS and internal conflicts.
Hakim praised Iraq’s strength in diversity, stressing the unity between Shiites and Sunnis, Arabs, Kurds, Turkmens, Muslims, Christians, Sabians and Yazidis.
He strongly stated that Iraq should not become a battlefield for others, but rather a place of dignity for its people.
“Our decisions, even under pressure and hardship, are independent and Iraqi in character,” he said. “Iraq should not be a theater of conflict, but a bridge of connection and a house of understanding.”
