TEHRAN – An exhibition of Islamic handicrafts opened on Friday in Iraq’s Wasit province, with the participation of 15 Iranian artists and producers in this field.
According to IRIB news agency, Abbas Mirzad, Lieutenant Governor of Ilam Province, said that holding the Ilam Handicrafts Exhibition in Wasit Province will be a good opportunity to showcase Iranian art and culture and develop economic cooperation between the two countries.
He also said that the week-long exhibition aims to showcase the artistic and cultural capabilities of Iram province and other Iranian provinces, develop the handicraft market and strengthen cultural ties between Iran and Iraq.
Mirzad added that various areas such as kilims, jazim, leather bags, leather mosaics, mat weaving, chits, traditional dolls and knitwear, pottery, jewellery, wood products and copper tableware are open to the public and interested parties.
He referred to the visit of a cultural delegation from Ilam province to Wasit province and Kut city, adding that during this visit and in meetings with Wasit officials, trade, tourism and student issues were discussed.
He said discussions were also held and decisions were taken regarding imports and exports, and it was also proposed to conclude a memorandum of understanding between the two countries to provide a basis for joint communication and trade development, which will be considered during the upcoming governor’s visit.
He added that Wasit district officials were invited on an awareness tour to Ilam district and got to know better about Ilam’s potential and capabilities.
Mirzad continued that handicrafts are a common language of all cultures, adding that the participation of artists in such events will promote cultural cooperation and better introduce Iranian original art to countries in the region.
He said that during the 14th government, special attention has been paid to promoting overseas markets for handicrafts. A total of three exhibitions have been held in Iraq so far, one in Sulaymaniyah and two in Wasit Governorate.
Mr. Mirzad expressed hope that such events will lay the foundation for promoting cultural, economic and tourism cooperation between the two countries.
