Yemen announced on Thursday that Ansarullah’s Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) chief of staff, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Abdul Karim al-Ghamari, was killed in an Israeli airstrike “while carrying out his mission” to defend Gaza.
The airstrike also claimed the lives of several police officers and al-Ghamali’s 13-year-old son, Hussein.
Yemen has appointed Major General Yusuf Hassan al-Madani as his successor.
Following this announcement, Israel publicly claimed responsibility for the attack, with Army Minister Israel Katz declaring that al-Ghamari was the target of an Israeli operation.
In a statement, YAF stressed that the conflict with Israel is not over yet and warned that Israel “will receive deterrent punishment for the crimes committed.”
In August, Israel announced that it had carried out air raids on Sanaa and attacked senior Yemeni officials. These attacks killed Yemen’s prime minister and several ministers, with Israel saying al-Ghamari was among the intended targets.
Al-Ghamali is Yemen’s highest-ranking military commander killed since 2023, when Yemen began targeting Israeli naval assets in response to the Gaza war.
YAF has reported more than 750 operations against Israeli-related targets.
