On Sunday, NPR reported that four people were killed and 10 others were injured in a shooting during a family gathering at a Stockton, California, banquet hall, citing sheriff’s officials.
San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Heather Brent said the victims included children and adults. Early indications “suggest this may have been a targeted incident,” Brent said at a news conference at the scene.
Local officials said the suspected gunman had not yet been captured and appealed to the public for help. Investigators are still working to determine a motive.
The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. inside a banquet hall that shares a parking lot with other businesses. Stockton is a city of 320,000 located approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Sacramento.
“Families should be together, not in the hospital, standing next to their loved ones and praying that they survive,” Mayor Cristina Fugazzi said.
Authorities did not immediately provide additional information about the victim’s condition. Officials earlier said several people were taken to the hospital.
