TEHRAN – A sign language training workshop for staff of tourism facilities was held in Yazd on Tuesday, organizers announced, with the aim of promoting accessible tourism in the UNESCO World Heritage city.
At the event, organized by the Museum of Light and Illumination, participants from various departments of the museum voiced their communication needs in the presence of sign language interpreters and received training on how to effectively interact with hearing-impaired visitors, CHTN reported.
The workshop will be extended to other tourism facilities and related associations in the province in cooperation with the Iranian National Welfare Agency.
Organizers added that the initiative followed a museum tour by the Zak Association of the Deaf on International Day of the Deaf, during which members visited the Museum of Light and Illumination and the Ta-o-Pud Museum, a nearby institution dedicated to the rich history of Iranian textiles, highlighting the need for improved communication.
Accessible tourism aims to make destinations and services available to all travelers, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and families with young children, by removing barriers and providing features such as ramps, audio descriptions, and detailed information.
In July 2017, the historical center of the provincial capital, Yazd, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yazd is consistently mentioned by almost all visitors as a fun place to stay or a ‘must-see’ destination. The city is filled with adobe houses with innovative badghirs (wind catchers), atmospheric alleys, and many Islamic and Iranian monuments that form an eye-catching cityscape. From a divine perspective, the city is home to three religions that coexist peacefully: Islam, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism.
