South Korean election president Choi Sang-Mok on Saturday highlighted the rise in “geopolitical risks” worldwide and expressed hope for a new chapter in relations with Japan.
“Geopolitical risks are strengthening around the world, increasing economic and trade uncertainty, and international relations are changing rapidly,” Choi told an event commemorating the 106th anniversary of the independence movement on March 1 against Japan’s colonial rule.
On behalf of President Yoon Sook-yeol, who was fired up, the representative South Korean president said that cooperation between Tokyo and Seoul is “essential” in order to “actually respond to the “international situation of graves.”
The proxy president said that “the shadow of conflict and division is darkening” in East Asian countries, referring to several weeks of protest and the growing disparity between Yoon’s supporters and opponents.
The Diet had overwhelmingly voted to remove Yoon from his office on December 14th, 2024 over the short-lived martial law order on December 3rd.
