British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said on Sunday that he agreed to draft a Ukrainian Peace Plan for European leaders to present to the US.
Just two days after Volodymyr Zelenskiy clashed with US President Donald Trump at the London summit, shortening his visit to Washington, European leaders have pledged to provide strong support to the Ukrainian president and do more to support his country.
European leaders agreed that they must spend more on defense to show Trump that the continent can protect themselves, and the European Commission chief suggested that the bloc could ease rules limiting debt levels.
Starmer, who welcomed Zelensky, visibly shaking in a warm embrace on Saturday, said the UK, Ukraine, France and other countries will form a “coalition of will” and create a peace plan to take him to Trump.
“This is not a moment to talk more. It’s time to act. It’s time to step up, lead, and unite around a new plan for just and lasting peace,” Starmer said.
The leaders did not provide details of their plans. Before the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron told newspaper Le Figaro that the plan would include a month-long ceasefire, which would apply to air and sea attacks, but not ground combat.
He said that if a more substantial peace agreement is reached, European troops will be deployed. It was not clear whether other countries agreed to the terms.
Zelenskiy said he left London after the meeting, ready to “clear European support” and cooperate.
“There will be diplomacy for peace,” he said at the nightly video address. “And for us all to be together – Ukraine, all Europe, and, undoubtedly, America.”
