The story of “Under the Dome,” published in 2009, unfolds at a factory in Chester, a struggling small town in Maine. This faces an extraordinary crisis when an invisible dome-like barrier suddenly envelops the community and separates it from the outside world.
This plot spans eight days from October 21st to October 28th, 2017. The catastrophe began at 11:44am on October 21st, when barriers suddenly fell, resulting in immediate injuries and deaths. Among the trapped people is former Army captain Dale “Barbie” Barbara, who was planning to leave the Chester factory due to a local conflict. Police Chief Howard “Duke” Perkins is killed when the pacemaker malfunctions near the dome, leaving behind a power vacuum quickly filled by James “Big Gym” Renny, a second-hand car salesman and a second-choice in town. Big Gym sees this crisis as an opportunity to integrate his powers and mercilessly manipulates the situation.
After Duke’s death, Big Jim appoints the incompetent Peter Randolph as the new police chief and begins recruiting police, filled with suspicious characters, including his son, Junior Renee. Junior suffers from difficulties caused by an undiagnosed brain tumor and has a violent past of committing several murders without being noticed. Meanwhile, Colonel James O. Cox, located outside the dome, contacts the town’s newspaper editor, Julia Shamway, and instructs Barbie to share his message. He proposes that Barbie act as a government agent to investigate the dome and effectively revive him in the military with new authority. This action incites Big Gym’s rage and his illicit executives, leading to an increase in tension.
As Big Gym fears fear and uncertainty among the townspeople to form resistance to his expanded tyranny, Grip, Barbie, Julia, and a few residents. When Barbie is unfairly imprisoned for a murder organized by the Big Gym, the situation escalates and culminates in a desperate attempt to find the source of the dome. They discover mysterious and extraterrestrial devices on an abandoned farm that appears to have been founded by leather head aliens as part of a cruel entertainment experiment.
Once the residents are despair is achieved, violent conflict continues between the Big Gym faction and those who oppose him. In the chaos that follows, a catastrophic explosion kills thousands of people, effectively destroying the town, and facing a toxic aftermath as only a few survivors remain. Among them are Barbie, Julia, and a group of resilient townspeople who struggle to survive in a choking state.
In the final conflict, Barbie and Julia reach out to the alien who is in charge of the Dome. By appealing to their sympathy and sharing humanity, they persuaded the lonely leather head to abandon control, resulting in the gradual disappearance of the dome. The law will free survivors from prisons that suffocate them and allow them to provide a bittersweet resolve to the calamity that has fallen into the Chester factory.
