Tehran – About 7,000 pilgrims travel on foot to Iran’s Mashhad city, commemorating the eighth Shia Imam, the sacred shrine of the sacred shrine (AS) of Imam Reza, the most important day of the Islamic calendar.
According to related officials, trekkers gathered in the sacred city during these days of mourning. This marked the martial artist anniversary of the grandson of Imam Hussein (AS), third Shia Imam, Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh).
The pilgrimage witnessed a prominent influx of followers from the regions surrounding Mashhad. “Around 2,000 pilgrims arrived in Tasua, and another 5,000 joined Asura and walked from various routes leading to the sacred shrine,” officials told CHTN on Monday.
The routes photographed by the pilgrims included roads from Old Kuchang Road, Siman Road, Tara Road and Fariman. Additional pilgrim groups also began their journey from nearby districts such as Deh-Gheibi, Seyedi, Torqabeh and Shandiz.
Along the way, the local community set up “Estgah-e Solavati” – a volunteer-run refresh station – offering free food, drinks and a rest area for pilgrims.
The shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Shia Muslims around the world. Imam, who was martyred in 818 AD, is respected for his knowledge, spiritual authority and position as a direct descendant of the Prophet. Millions of people visit his shrine annually, especially during the Islamic months of Muharam and Safa.
Tasua and Asura fell on the 9th and 10th of Muharam, and to commemorate the tragic battle of Kalbara in 680 AD, Imam Hussein (AS) and his faithful companions martyred. Recently, it has been characterized by mourning rituals, passions and pilgrimages that reflect deep devotion and collective memory among Iranians and other Shiite Muslims around the world.
Already one of the most sacred cities in the Shiite world, Mashhad became the focus of religious unity and emotions during these memorials, in scenes of strict castration and spiritual gatherings around the golden shrine of Imam Reza.
