Tehran – Iranian director Farid Ramati is planning to reconsider the adaptation of the play “Grengary Glenn Ross” by American playwright and filmmaker David Mamet, held at the DA Theatre Hall in Tehran on July 30th.
The performance was previously performed at Entezami Hall at the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) in Tehran last year.
Mahyar Eslami, Hadi Ahmadi, Kamran Eqtedari, Majid Ahangaran and Behnam Momeni are the main members of the cast who will remain on stage until August 21st.
“Grengar Glenroth” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play that offers a gritty portrayal of four desperate salesmen who stop nothing to succeed. The play continues two intense days in the lives of these struggling agents. These rely on deceiving, manipulating, and even robbers to close deals and earn a living. The world premiere of “Grengar Glenroth” was held in 1983 at the National Theatre in London under the direction of Bilbriden. The production received extensive acclaim for its extraordinary ensemble performance.
The play made its Broadway debut at the John Golden Theatre in 1984, and delivered 378 performances until it closed in 1985. Director Gregory Mosher featured a talented cast including Jo Mantegna, Mike Nusbaum, Robert Proski, Lane Smith, James Tolcan, Jack Wallace, and JT Walsh. In 1992, a film adaptation of “Grengar Glenloss” was released, directed by James Foley and written by David Mamet. The film boasted an impressive cast including Al Pacino, Jack Lemon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey and Jonathan Price.
The characters in the play are complex and multifaceted. Richard “Ricky” Roma is the most successful salesman in the office, but his methods are ruthless and dishonest. Shelley “The Machine” Levene is an older salesman who has fallen into difficult times and is eager to sell. James Link is a ti-sick man who will become Rome’s newest client, and John Williamson is an office manager who is constantly under pressure from salesmen. George Arronow is a low-age salesman who struggles to keep up with his colleagues. Dave Moss is a large caliber salesman with big dreams and schemes. Beylen is a police detective who becomes involved in the office struggle.
David Mamet is a well-known American playwright, filmmaker and author. He has earned many accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize and Tony nominations for his plays “Grengary Glen Ross” and “Speed the Pro.” Mamet’s breakthrough appeared in the 1970s in his trio’s off-Broadway plays, including “The Duck Variations” and “American Buffalo.”
His feature films as a writer and director include House of Games, Murder and Robber. He also wrote the scripts for “The Untouchables,” “Wag the Dog,” and “Hannibal.” Mamet’s literary works include “On Directing Film,” an explanatory commentary on filmmaking and “The Old Religion,” a novel about Leoffrank’s lynching.
