Tehran – Written, directed and produced by Ashkan Lagozal, Iranian animated feature film Juliet & the King won its first international award at the 2025 Palm Springs International Animation Festival (PSIAF) held in the US.
The 90-minute 2D family animation was announced as the winner of the StreamTacular Award at the closing ceremony on August 15th, the IRNA reported.
In the animation, Iranian king Nasser al-Din Shah receives an invitation to visit France. He loves Europe and he always takes the opportunity to visit there. The actress catches his eye while visiting Romeo Juliet’s play in Paris. He falls in love with her so deeply, he asks her to perform the same play in Tehran, so he can impress her and win her heart.
Actress Julie decided to take this opportunity. With the help of her friend Jamal, she plays in Iran and anticipates progress in her career. However, she suddenly finds herself at the centre of the attention of the woman and the king of the jealous court.
“Juliet & The King” is Rahgzar’s second animation feature, produced by Hoorakhsh Studios after the mythical fantasy “The Last Fiction” (2018).
A blend of traditional Disney-style fairy tales with 19th-century Iranian background results in a compelling investigation of cultural contrasts. Set in the second half of that century, the story offers Largozar’s interpretation of how Persian society once saw the world. The times are certainly evolving, but the themes explored are relevant and stimulating thought.
The Palm Springs International Animation Festival is a world-renowned event that celebrates the best animations from around the world. Dedicated to showcasing artistic excellence and innovation, PSIAF brings together filmmakers, artists and animation enthusiasts to experience groundbreaking storytelling through animated films of all styles and techniques. From traditional hand-drawn animations to cutting-edge CGI, PSIAF emphasizes the creative power of animation as an art form.
