Tehran- “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is a 2025 action film by American director Christopher McQuarrie that appeared on screen at the Arasbaran Cultural Center in Tehran on Wednesday.
Film screening followed by a review session.
“Mission: Impossible – Final Calculation” is the eighth article in the iconic “Mission: Impossible” movie series. As a direct sequel to “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” (2023), the film continues the thrilling adventure of Ethan Hunt, portrayed by Tom Cruise in his final appearance as a legendary IMF agent.
The film premiered in Tokyo in May and was subsequently screened for non-competitiveness at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Critics have won extensive praise for “final calculations” for their intense action sequences, persuasive storytelling and Tom Cruise’s iconic performance. With a large budget estimated between $300 million and $400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever produced. It has won around $598 million worldwide, making it the eighth highest selling film of 2025 and boasts the franchise’s biggest opening weekend.
Set two months after obtaining the key to the source code of a dangerous AI known as an entity, Ethan Hunt receives a message directly from US President Erica Sloan. She warns that the entities are being helped by underground apocalyptic cultists to seize control of nuclear weapons around the world. Despite the order to abandon the key, Hunt decided to stop the AI’s destructive plan. Alongside fellow IMF agent Benzidan, Hunt visits Luther Sticker, an accomplished hacker who has developed malware called “Poison” that can disable entities.
The team is looking for intelligence agents Theogas and Gabriel’s Fumichu Li, Paris. Paris reveals the location of the sinking Russian submarine Sebastopol. Gabriel, the former proxy of AI, captures hunting and grace, but the hunt escapes with the help. In a tense sequence, Hunt jumps into a wreck, retrieves Podokova, and escapes death and decompression sickness thanks to Grace’s assistance.
With Podokova in hand, Hunt aims to trick the entities into entering a physical drive rather than a mainframe. However, Gabriel ambushes his team in a bunker, demands Podokova and tries to explode the nuclear weapons. A fierce gunfight continues, and Hunt’s team competes to soften the bomb. This is activated during confusion. Gabriel is killed in the process, but instead forces Hunt into a final showdown, not before stealing the poison.
In a high octane sequence, Hunt chases Gabriel on the plane, breaking his arm and regaining his poison. As the clock tickets, the Hunt inserts the device into the Podokova and triggers the containment of the entity just before the nuclear warhead activates. The climax features bold aerial stunts, tense off-air battles and the ultimate sacrifice of hunts. As Podokova is destroyed, he remains a farewell message from Luther, ensuring that the nuclear threat is neutralised.
“Mission: Impossible – Final Calculation” marks the end of the era and concludes a series that redefines modern action films. Its massive budgets, groundbreaking stunts and complex plots set new standards for blockbuster film production. The film not only concludes the story of Ethan Hunt, but also means a generational change in the franchise, with new characters and themes emerging for future installments.
The film is celebrated with its bold action scenes, emotional depth and the enduring charisma of Tom Cruise. The film’s international scope and technological themes reflect contemporary unrests about AI and global security, making it a fitting finale for a franchise rooted in spy, heroism and innovation.
