Tehran – Iranian director Maud Taybi will perform an adaptation of British playwright and poet William Shakespeare’s most popular play, Hamlet, in the 17th edition of the Essos Ankara International Theatre Festival in Turkey.
Written by Tayyebi and Yeganeh Mohammadi, the play has been renamed “Hamlet the Killer,” Mehr reported Wednesday.
The main theme of this edition of the festival, which will be held from October 16th to 26th, is “Theatres and Cities.”
“Hamlet the Killer” is a production of the Mise-en-Scène Theatre Academy, which premiered previously in the spring at Tehran’s City Theatre Complex. This marks the play’s first international appearance.
The contemporary and condensed adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy explores power relations, symbolic violence, and personal responsibility in today’s urban structures. Featuring minimalist stage designs and emphasizing the actor’s performance along with musical and acoustic effects, the production offers an intense and intimate experience for the audience.
Taybi, director of the film, expressed his enthusiasm for playing “Hamlet the Killer” in Turkey, saying, “Instead of recreating Shakespeare’s classic universe, the Ankara and Ethos Festival aim to outline today’s violence.”
“Hamlet the Killer serves as a practice of facing the infinite questions of justice and as a practice of seeking the participation of the audience in moral judgment,” he added.
“My goal in my work is to prevent judgment. This frees the publication of a final verdict. I create a scenario that allows the audience to interpret the character’s actions within the context and determine the relationship between justice and revenge.
“Hamlet” is a tragedy following the story of Prince Hamlet of Denmark, seeking revenge for the murder of his father, King Hamlet. The play reveals that King Hamlet’s ghost appears in his son and that he has been murdered by his brother, King Claudius. Hamlet is torn between his desire for revenge and his inner confusion, suffering from his own mortality rate and the consequences of his actions.
When Hamlet plans his revenge, he becomes increasingly isolated and paranoid, leading to a series of tragic events. He performs a play that recreates the murder of his father to confirm Claudius’ guilt, which ultimately leads to an unrevealment of his own. His love interest and relationships between Hamlet and those around him, including his friends Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern, become tense as he is more consumed by his quest for vengeance.
As the play progresses, the tension between Hamlet and Claudius reaches its peak, leading to a dramatic conflict that leads to the deaths of several people. Hamlet ultimately fulfills his quest for revenge, but he pays a great deal of sacrifice as he succumbs to his wounds. The play ends with the deaths of Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude and Laertes, highlighting the tragic consequences of acting on the destructive nature and impulses of revenge.
Through complex characters and poetic language, Shakespeare explores the themes of revenge, madness and mortality in “Hamlet.” The play explores the inner workings of the human mind and depicts the struggle of a young prince who is caught up in a web of deceit and betrayal. Ultimately, “Hamlet” serves as a tale of attention about the risk of succumbing to his darkest impulses and the tragic consequences of seeking vengeance at any cost.
“Hamlet” is adapted to a variety of media forms, including film, television and stage production. One notable adaptation is Kenneth Branagh’s 1996 film version of “Hamlet.” This features an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors who remained true to the original text. Brana’s adaptation captures the essence of Shakespeare’s tragic narrative and incorporates cinematic techniques to enhance the narrative, making it accessible to a wider audience.
In addition to traditional adaptations, “Hamlet” has also been rethinked in modern environments and contexts, offering a new interpretation of classical plays. Examples include films like “The Lion King.” “The Lion King” includes a story of a young prince seeking revenge for his father’s death, and a stage production that places characters in contemporary settings to explore related social and political themes.
William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest playwright in English literature and was born in 1564. Throughout his career, Shakespeare has written impressive works, including over 36 plays, 154 sonnets and several poems. His plays span a variety of genres, including tragedies such as “Hamlet” and “Macbeth,” comedies such as “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Twelfth Night,” and history such as “Henry V” and “Richard III.” Shakespeare’s work is renowned for its complex plots, memorable characters and deep insight into the human condition, making it a timeless part of literature that continues to captivate viewers around the world.
