TEHRAN – Iranian director Mohammad Malekshahi plans to reprise his loose adaptation of Matt Haig’s fantasy novel “The Midnight Library” at Tehran’s Malek Theater in the near future.
This performance was previously performed at the same venue in January and April, and was one of the most-watched plays of the year.
Shayda Khaliq and Mohammad Shabanpol are the main cast of the play, which is based on a script written by Mojtaba Golestani and Nima Nafeh.
Originally published in 2020, the novel tells the story of a 35-year-old British woman, unhappy in her dead-end life, who is given the chance to experience the life she might have had had she made different choices.
Nora Seed finds herself in the library in the middle of the night and has a chance to make things right. Her life so far has been full of misery and regret. She feels she has let everyone down, including herself. But things are about to change.
At night, she attempts suicide, but ends up in the library managed by the school’s librarian. The library is between life and death, holding millions of books filled with the story of her life, should she have made any decisions.
Thanks to the books in the Midnight Library, Nora can live as if she had done something different. With the help of an old friend, she can now undo all her regrets while trying to build the perfect life. But things aren’t always as she imagined. Soon her choices put the library and herself in extreme danger.
Before time runs out, she must answer the ultimate question: What is the best way to live?
Midnight Library has been shortlisted for the 2021 British Book Award for Fiction Book of the Year.
