TEHRAN – In the Shadow of the Cypress, an Iranian short animated film co-directed by Hossein Moreimi and Shirin Sohani
The Academy of Motion Picture Sciences announced the nominations for the 2025 Oscars on Thursday. The Iranian flick will compete with four other short animations, including the Belgian and French-Dutch short “Beautiful Men,” the Japanese “Magic Candy,” and a Dutch animation. “Wonder Wonder” and “Yak!” from France.
A production of the Institute of Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (known as Kanoon) in 2023, the animated film participated in many international festivals and won several awards, Isna reported.
The 20-minute animation “Shadow of Cypress” depicts a former captain suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who lives with his daughter in a humble house by the ocean. Together, they are isolated from the world and must face the challenges of their situation. One morning, their lives change forever when an unexpected event occurs.
Their tough, secluded life is brought out of its isolation by the unexpected arrival of a bound whale. When his daughter refuses to give up the animal, the captain faces his own demons in this inspiring and universal story about resilience.
According to the director, the film is, in a sense, a tribute to the veterans of the Iran-Iraq War, especially those who still suffer from PTSD.
The 97th edition of the Academy Awards will see winners announced in a live televised event on March 2nd at the Dolby Theater at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.
