Tehran Tehran City Theater is currently hosting the play “The Truth About Rachel.”
Written and directed by Sadeq Vafai, the production is an adaptation of his own novel “When Will Wo The War War War End?”
Bahman Vakhshour, Sayeh Kabiri, Payam Kiani, Mehdi Heidari and Vafai themselves are the main members of the cast who will remain on stage until March 12th.
“Rachel’s Truth” explores the distortion and manufacturing that specific media propagates. While these organizations claim to present truth and attract large audiences, they often fail to tell the true story, creating casualties, including themselves.
The play centres on the American women who published her memoirs, and encourages an invitation to a talk show entitled “The Truth.” The program host, who is also a woman’s child, begins a deep conversation into the tragic events of the last days of World War II.
During the discussion, the woman recounts a traumatic experience, claiming that a German officer raped her, which ultimately led to the birth of a host – her child, the embodiment of both her suffering and the devastating effects of the war.
However, the story makes a complicated turn with the introduction of Russian men who saved a woman during the ordeal. As the conversation unfolds, the host faces conflicting statements from his mother, urging him to question the credibility of her story. As he digs deeper into the truth, the host is working on not only his mother’s past, but also a broader implication of how the story is shaped and reshaped in the media landscape.
