TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira exchanged views on bilateral relations and the international situation in a telephone conversation.
During the meeting, the two top diplomats emphasized the importance of expanding relations and cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, as well as strengthening mutual partnerships at the level of international organizations.
Mr. Araguchi then recalled the importance of preventing certain countries from using international institutions to put pressure on developing countries.
He referred to the unwarranted move of three European countries to push for the adoption of an anti-Iranian resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors meeting, dismissing the move as irresponsible, provocative and unjust.
Iran and Brazil have maintained close relations over the past years and have made every effort to build closer ties in all aspects.
A few months ago, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the need to strengthen ties with Brazil, especially in the areas of trade, economy, agriculture and health.
He made the comments during a meeting with Brazilian Vice President Gerard Alkmin, who was in Tehran to attend Pezeshkian’s swearing-in ceremony.
The Iranian President said that the 120-year-old relationship between Iran and Brazil is a strong foundation for further expanding ties between the two countries.
The Brazilian Vice President expressed hope that bilateral relations between Iran and Brazil will further strengthen during President Pezeshkian’s term. He also extended an invitation to Brazilian President Lula da Silva to attend the BRICS summit to be held in Brazil next year.
Iran and Brazil cooperate closely within the framework of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Back in July, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi attended the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil.
In his speech at the event, Araghchi outlined Iran’s positions on multilateralism, economic and financial cooperation, and strengthening AI. Mr. Araguchi stressed the need for structural reform of the United Nations to align it with today’s global realities. He blamed the UN Security Council’s inaction regarding violations and threats to peace on the selective and destructive approach of certain Member States.
Foreign Ministers called for strengthening South-South cooperation, empowering regional organizations and promoting dialogue between countries as a counter to hegemonic discourse.
Aragushi condemned economic sanctions and unilateral coercive measures as a means of putting pressure on independent states, while calling for the creation of legal mechanisms within BRICS to monitor and counter such actions in the international arena.
Iran’s top diplomat also spoke about the importance of emerging technologies and modern science, including AI, in economic growth in the Global South.
He stressed the need to unite against the excuses of certain governments to deprive our country of its fundamental right to access science and technology.
